Tucked away over on the edge of the Old Port is one of the most interesting and inventive shops in Portland – Vena’s Fizz House. Part antique store, part foodie supply, and part new-fashioned soda fountain, it’s a place no other in the city — and perhaps in the entire country.
Step inside the front door and you’ll find yourself in an elegant space filled with beautifully curated vintage glassware and bar supplies. This is not your typical thrift store jumble, but rather a carefully selected inventory of objects, with an eye toward the best of mid-century design.
Step through the archway, and you’ll find a very wide selection of ingredients, tools, and inspiration for anyone interested in making sodas, tonics, and mocktails at home. This is a selection way beyond a few SodaStream flavorings. These are tools for the connoisseur, the foodie. The selection is expansive, eclectic, with a strong focus on good health and good design.
However, it’s the section up in the back where the real action is happening: this is the soda bar, which features an amazing selection of fruit fizzes, herb and spice elixirs, old-fashioned sodas, and very modern mocktails. Whether you are looking for a turn of the century style ginger fizz or a very modern Blood Orange cordial, everything on tap is tasty, unique, and completely non-alcoholic. I honestly can’t think of a more refreshing place to stop in on a hot day.
Vena’s Fizz House is located at 345 Fore St in Portland. You can visit their website, check them out on Instagram, connect with them on Facebook or on Twitter, or shop in their Etsy store. They’ve also gotten quite a bit of local press.
Distance from the Maine State Pier: two-tenths of a mile; about a 4 minute walk.
