*Cue Muppet Happy Dance* Saturday marks one of the days I look forward to through the entire long, cold, bleak Maine winter: the first day the Farmer’s Market returns to Deering Oaks park. The market runs from 7 am until noon, and will feature over 35 farmers and vendors selling seedlings, meat, fresh eggs, spring greens, flowers, honey, a few crafts, and much much more. Although the winter market is wonderful, and the Monument Square Wednesday market has been going strong for a few weeks, there is something special about the opening of the Saturday Summer market – like the day that pitchers and catchers report, it marks a turning point in the calendar. I hope we see you there.
Speaking of great outdoor spaces in the city, on Friday night Portland Trails will host what promises to be a fairly amazing fundraising auction at The Portland Club on State Street. Tickets are $25 for members, or $25 for non-Members, and the event starts at 5:30 pm. They’ve been posting item listings on their Facebook page (the complete list is also on-line here) and there are some true one-of-a-kind items up for bid, including a run with Joan Benoit.
Saturday marks the Y’s Healthy Kids Day events at their Portland, Freeport, and Pineland Farms branches. Click the link to find out more about events designed to promote healthy habits and build strong, healthy kids.
All weekend, the Maine Playwrights Festival will be hosting staged readings and performances at venues around the Greater Portland area, including the ever-popular two-minute plays. Festival passes are $45, or you can buy tickets for a single day of presentations or just a single performance. Click here for more information about performances, times, costs, and venues.
Finally, you may have noticed that the Time & Temp building has been flashing ‘Bike’ ‘Swap’ for the past few days. The Portland edition of the Great Maine Bike Swap will be held on Sunday the 29th from 10 am to 2 pm at the Sullivan Gym on the USM’s Portland campus. We plan to be there to try and find a new-to-us bike for our five year old. You can sell bikes as well. The whole scoop can be found on the Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s Web Page.
Wish us luck on finding a bike, and I hope you have a terrific weekend!
